World Population 2011 with India's Birth Control Story in Perspective

In a society which zealously protects its modesty and shies away from discussing the 'birds and the bees' openly; Indians ironically, grow up watching adverts of contraceptives and Family planning tips on Television. Every child can identify the sign of Nirodh (highly subsidised condoms promoted and distributed by NACO in India), sing to the tune of 'एक गोली' (referring to the one-a day birth control pill) and say 'हम दो, हमारे दो' (meaning a couple with two children) which later became 'hum दो, हमारे एक ( a happy couple with one child) even before he knows his multiplication tables. Indian Government in a tizzy over the population explosion used the only effective medium of television, to convey the all important message of birth control and family planning to its milions making a lasting impression with catchy slogans and eye catching adverts such as the ''jo bola wohi sikander -nirodh commercial'', as even those in slum dwellings who lack clean water and toilets have access to the Television.

In a predicament over the issue of population control amidst differences in language, cultural and religious differences; slogans, often found adorning the rear of trucks and auto rickshaws, have been the hallmark of India's population control campaign. As cities overflow, stretch, expand and merge with their neighbours -(as in NCR comprising of Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Faridabad which are along with Delhi almost conjoined even though they belongs to 3 different states-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana),any progress made in terms of infrastructure and amenities is greedily gobbled up by the teeming masses.

To give credit to the Government, the roadblocks encountered by them in their path to implement the population control policy have been intimidating and quite unique to India. Farmers have long been known to have more children so that they have more hands to tend to the farm when they age. But with the growing inflation, they have realized, albeit too late, that before the hands can reach out to help, the mouths have to feed and the bodies have to clothe too. The other roadblock is deeprooted in the Indian psyche - the quest for a male heir. The dynasties have long gone but the quest for an heir hasn't. Small pockets in states like Rajasthan and Bihar are most affected where the shameful practice of female infanticide is still rampant though the entire country is yet to free itself from this scourge.

Even as India's population growth is pegged at a decent 1.3 %, it's current fertility rate is 2.6 per woman, the current population has already crossed the 1.18 billion mark (source: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/in.html) .

As India prepares itself to take over the title of the most populous state from China by 2030, I try to pit the Indian fight against rising population against that of countries like Singapore which are encouraging bigger families in order to boost their country's work force in the future. Read on to see how different regions of the world will be impacted by an estimated world population of 7billion in 2011/2012.

Please post your comments on how you think personal decisions of couples to bear offspring are getting subjected to this dynamics of world population with even the Governments of different countries intervening and influencing the decision- making process.
